A crowbar attack in front of a bustling Peet’s coffee shop in Belmont earlier this month stemmed from a jailhouse argument between motorcycle gang rivals, prosecutors said Monday.
Orlando Jesus Rodriguez, 40, faces multiple charges in connection with the March 6 brawl that broke out while the El Camino coffee shop was buzzing with customers about 11:35 a.m.
Rodriguez, who prosecutors say is a member of the "Wanted" biker gang, and the victim, an alleged Hells Angels Motorcycle Club member, had argued while doing time in county jail early this month. After they were both released, prosecutors said, Rodriguez spotted the victim having a coffee at Peet's, which led to a fight outside the shop. Rodriguez allegedly swung a crowbar at the victim’s head. The victim, a 33-year-old man, blocked the blow with his left arm and suffered a serious fracture, prosecutors said.
After the attack, Rodriguez allegedly stated “Are you still claiming Hells Angels?” before driving off in his car, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
Rodriguez is a member of a rival gang called “Wanted,” Wagstaffe said. The gang is currently embroiled in a violent feud with the Hells Angels, the district attorney said.
Rodriguez remains in custody on $250,000 bail and was scheduled to be arraigned Monday afternoon.
