AUSTRALIA - Police say bikie laws would help curb crime

OFF THE WIRE
organised crime throughout regional Western Australia.

The proposed legislation, which is currently being debated in Parliament, would give courts the power to declare motorcycle gxxgs criminal organisations and mean bikies associating with one another could be jailed for five years.
The Superintendent of the Goldfields-Esperance District, Kevin Looby, says organised criminal bikie networks need to be broken up.
"I can say without contradiction that the bikie groups within WA are responsible for a lot of the, I suppose, unreported crime and we are talking about drug supply, extortion, those sorts of things," he said.
Superintendent Looby says currently police are required to dedicate significant resources to fighting bikie-related crime.
"There is a strong focus on bikie movement throughout regional WA and of course that comes at a cost," he said.
